Introduction to the Program
At BGCTUB, the BA (Honors) and MA programs offer a unique blend of literature in English and applied linguistics. They represent, on the one hand, a broad sampling of British, American, and world literature written in English; on the other, developments in linguistics and language teaching that provide the opportunity to learn the use and evaluation of current classroom techniques for the teaching of English. Extensive reading and writing, along with discussion and presentation skills are required in virtually all the courses offered by the department. The focus on critical reading and analytic reasoning and lucid writing is central to the mission of the department.
The department may be proud of a pool of experienced and learned faculty members with orientation to innovative teaching, research and sincere counselling. The department runs a Debating Club, Drama and Cultural Club and Press and Creative Writing Club. These clubs organize a full-range of co-academic and social events throughout the year.

Graduate Profiles:

1.Duration of the BA Honours in English programme:
The programme of study for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honors shall extend over a period of 4(four) academic years comprising 8(eight) semesters and shall be completed by a student in not more than 6(six) academic years.
2.Course identification system:
a. Each course shall be designated by three / four letters for the subject/discipline as decided by the concerned department. This will be followed by a three digit number for the course of which the first digit will correspond to the semester. Thus ENG 405 will be for the fifth English course of the 4th semester.
b. Each course shall comprise 100 marks which is equivalent to 3 credits. Each course is so designed as to be completed in minimum 42-45 class hours.
All courses will be prepared by the relevant Committee of Courses and Studies of the Department. In case of preparing related courses, teachers of relevant subjects should be consulted.
3. In order to be eligible for appearing at the final semester examinations candidates are required to attend not less than 60% of the Lectures. The Academic Committee of the Department may recommend marginal cases of shortage of attendance (below 60%) on special ground and on production of documentary evidences.
4.The course teacher shall submit the class attendance report to the Chairman of the Department before processing the examination entry.
5.Medium of Examination: The medium of examinations will be English.

7. Duration of examination:
Examination will be held on semester basis on dates to be scheduled by the Departmental academic Committee. Time allotted for examination will be as follows: for theoretical courses, 1.30 hours for 30 marks, 2.30 hours for 50 marks and 4 hours for 75-100 marks.

9.Promotion Criteria: A student is required to fulfill the following conditions for promotion to the next higher class: S/he must earn at least 40% of the total marks at his/her respective final semester, failing which he/she will be declared to have failed in the respective examination.
a. To get promotion from 1st semester to 2nd semester a student should pass at least three credit courses and should not fail in more than two courses. At this stage s/he shall be allowed to take part in the remaining courses of 1st semester in subsequent semester final examinations.
b. In all other semesters for promotion to the next semester, a student should not fail in more than 2 courses and s/he should appear in subsequent semester final examination of those failed courses and must pass the courses.
c. If s/he fails to pass in the remaining courses of the 1st semester class in the subsequent semester final exam, he/she shall not be promoted to the 3rd semester class. In that case he/she should be treated as a student of the 2nd semester class and he/she must have to pass in remaining courses of 1st semester within the next immediate 1st semester exam, failing which he/she shall be dropped out of the programme.
d.If a student fails to appear at the Viva-Voce examination, the examination committee may recommend him for appearing at the Viva-Voce examination on special grounds and on production of documentary evidences subject to the approval of the Chairman. Under the benefit of this provision he/she shall have to bear all expenses to conduct the Viva-Voce examination as fixed by the University authorities.
e. The Controller of Examinations shall publish the Cumulative results of the programme and shall provide the transcript/Grade certificate showing course-wise grades and the cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of the candidates for the degree of B.A.(English) Honours.
10.Failed Students:
If a student fails to pass in more than two courses of the 1st ,2nd ,and 3rd ,4th , 5th ,6th ,7th semesters BA(Hons) English examination he/she will not be promoted to the next higher class and he/she will be treated as a failed student. The failed student must pass the remaining courses with the next batch that immediately follows as an irregular candidate. If he/she fails to pass the remaining courses he/she shall be declared disqualified from the continuation of the course i.e. he/she shall be dropped out of the programme.
11.Degree Requirements:
for the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours.
a. A student of the programme will be required to earn 126 credit hours:
b. For the degree of BA(Hons) no grades from any source other than that of the prescribed credit hours will be considered.
c. The candidate carrying F Grade in any course shall not be awarded the degree of BA(Hons).
d. For passing an individual course maintaining a minimum grade point (GPA) of 2.00 is required.
e. A student must pass all the courses of 1st,2nd ,3rd ,4th ,5th ,6th ,7th and 8th semester final examinations maintaining a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00.
12.Improvement of Grades:
a.A student can improve the grade by appearing at the examination of the immediate next batch; students earning less than A+ in any course in the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh semester may also choose to improve the grade by appearing at the Mid-Term & Semester Final Examination in the same course with the next batch. If such a student fails to improve his/her grade(s), his/her previous grade in the same course will remain valid.
b.A student shall be allowed to improve the grade of a course only once in a semester.
c.No improvement shall be allowed in the in-course tests/home assignment grades or the grades earned in Practical, Viva-Voce, Sessional, Tutorial and Field works as well as in the course(s) in which the student did not attend classes or appear in examination.
d. For improvement of grade in a course the student shall apply to the Departmental Chairman at least 4 weeks before the start of the semester final examination.
e. Improvement shall not be allowed after the distribution of the certificate.
f. The Program Officer of the Department shall have to prepare list(s) of candidates for the improvement categories and send one copy of each to the office of the Controller of Examinations, Academic section and Treasurer within 15 days of publication of results.
13.Re-Admission:
a. In case a student fails to pass the 1st,2nd ,3rd ,4th ,5th ,6th ,7th and 8th semester BA Honours examinations due to shortage of required percentage of attendance or fails to deposit the examination fees due to some unavoidable circumstances or is expelled from the University for any reason as the case may be, he/she shall have to get himself readmitted to the subsequent 1st,2nd ,3rd ,4th ,5th ,6th ,7th and 8th semester BA Honours classes respectively only within 30 days from the date of publication of 1st,2nd ,3rd ,4th ,5th ,6th ,7th and 8th semester final results. The syllabus in force for the examination concerned will be applicable for such students.
b. Readmission in a semester may be allowed only twice and not more than three semesters in classes during the entire programme. For example, when a student has been given three chances of readmission to the 7th semester, he/she will not be given another chance of readmission in the 8th semester.
14 .Adoption of Unfair Means:
a. If a student adopts unfair means in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th semester BA(Hons) examination, he /she shall be penalized with the cancellation of the result of his /her respective semester. But his /her results of the previous semester (s) shall remain valid. Besides this, disciplinary action shall be taken by the Examination Disciplinary Committee against the candidate found guilty of offences as per rules of the University.
b. In case a student of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th semester is expelled from the university for any reason as the case may be, he/she shall have to get himself/herself readmitted to the subsequent 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th semester BA Honours class respectively for one time only. The syllabus in effect of the examination concerned will be applicable for such a student.
c. If any student adopts unfair means in any examination, the teacher, invigilator shall report his nature of unfair means to the Chief-invigilator / Chairman of the examination committee for onward transmission to Disciplinary Committee of the University for action as per rules.
15 .Academic Calendar: The Academic calendar showing dates for starting and finishing classes, commencement of examinations and publication of the results shall be announced by the Academic Committee of the respective Department before commencement of each semester. Unless any special and unavoidable circumstances happen, the Academic calendar shall not be changed.
